“Let us tell you a bit about BJ’s Coffee Company... Established in 1992, we are the oldest family owned and operated cafe & coffee roasting company in Oregon. We get our namesake from our founder Becky Jo, who was born and raised in Forest Grove. BJ fell in love with the coffee industry when she lived on a coffee farm in Kona, Hawaii. It was there that she gave birth to her son, Nathan, who is our roaster and owner. BJ and Nathan moved back home to Forest Grove from Hawaii in the early 90’s, and in 1992 she and Ken Palmer started the roastery and coffee shop that you now know as “BJ’s Coffee Company”. As a family they traveled to numerous coffee producing countries, experiencing first hand every aspect of coffee farming and production. While Nathan was born and raised working in the coffee industry, he originally went to college in Bend, Oregon to pursue his interest in architecture. But, his passion for coffee couldn’t be denied, and so he pursued coffee roasting with every penny he had. It proved a natural talent when Nathan received his Q grader certification, which made him the youngest American to receive this certification at the time. He continues to chase his passion for specialty coffee, and supply Forest Grove and people all over the United States with quality micro-lot coffee.

Today, BJ has retired, and though you may still see her at the cafe from time to time, BJ’s Coffee Company is now owned and operated by her son Nathan and his wife, Lindsay Jo, who continue her legacy and carry forward the same passion for coffee and community.
All of the coffees we brew and sell are roasted to order, twice a week, in small batches here in Forest Grove at the shop or at Nathan’s wholesale roastery To The Roots Coffee Roasters on 23rd Avenue in Forest Grove. Every coffee he roasts, he personally selected and blended through thoughtful sampling and cupping. He responsibly sources his beans from all over the world, by creating direct trade relationships with farmers, cooperatives and responsible importers. When buying green coffee, Nathan follows the picking season, so he is importing and roasting only the freshest coffee from countries around the world.”
